Do you remember the runners from Crazy Race? Who doesn't know this epic drawing of Hanna Barbera, the Crazy Race (or “Wacky Races” in English), where eleven competitors competed in the race in every episode in search of the world title of “World's craziest runner”. Certainly one of the greatest classics of all time.
The cartoon was released on CBS, which ran from September 14, 1968 through January 4, 1970, yielding 34 episodes. The television network SBT repeated the cartoon for several years here in Brazil. Check out here on Coliseu Geek some fun facts about Mad Racing!
Most characters stood out equally in the cartoon, however Dicky crook and Muttley can be considered the "main actors”, thus receiving, a few years later, his own cartoon, Máquinas Voadoras.
The cartoon depicted the adventures of Dick Scam and his Vulture Squadron, frantically chasing a carrier pigeon, called Doodle, which carried secret messages to allies during World War I. Let's remember the main characters in the cartoon:
Car 00: The Machine of Evil, piloted by Dick swindler and Muttley, your companion dog, who try to win the race anyway, doing all kinds of cheating, but always unsuccessful, even with their powerful car and apparently the best in the race, the duo always got along badly, having to stop many times in the middle of the race to fix it.
Car 01: Basically it's a car made almost entirely of Stone, piloted by the Rock brothers (Look at that!), two cavemen in a stone car. In some episodes, the Rocha Brothers manage to have a good result with their vehicle and their brilliant decisions. But in most situations they have to deal with other opponents who can beat them.
Car 02: The Evil Machine, piloted by Dick Vigarista and Muttley, his companion dog, who try to win the race anyway, doing all kinds of cheating, but always unsuccessful, even with their powerful car and apparently the best in the race, the duo always got along badly, having to stop many times in the middle of the race to fix it.
Car 03: Piloted by the teacher Air, this magnificent car at first has the shape of a boat with wheels, it is full of contraptions worthy of a bauble teacher and it can turn into absolutely anything. The Professor usually uses his inventions to help other competitors to go through various obstacles and impediments, both from natural causes and those caused by other pilots. He also uses his creations to attack his rivals, let that be clear!
Car 04: Who drives the wheel around here is the red baron. And he pilots this hybrid model of car and plane alone, capable of limited flying, usually enough to pass over pilots and obstacles that come his way. The Lata Voadora also has a machine gun mounted sporadically. The Red Baron is the first race winner of the history of the Crazy Race and got it two more wins.
Car 05: The driver of the all-pink, makeup-filled car is the big influence of racing on the design: the Penelope charming. And these beauty tools also act as indirect weapons against other pilots. For example, the shampoo foam that can be splashed on competitors' faces.
Car 06: This is the famous and acclaimed Bombard Sergeant and his co-pilot, soldier meekley. A real duo who commanded the car half tank, half jeep. The Tank Car uses its war accessories during the race, such as the cannon. Despite being a robust and powerful vehicle, it only won three times.
Car 07: this magnificent 1920s sedan car was piloted by a mafia called death gang, formed by seven foolish and half-dumb gangsters. The gang is confused by the police with criminals, as they are always involved in situations considered as “bizarre”, such as passing through Snow White's dwarfs, circus dancers, among others. When they need more speed or overtake someone, they use their own legs to propel the car (yes!). This group has only won four times in the entire Mad Race.
Car 08: uncle Thomas and his cowardly and very sleepy copilot, the cry bear, are responsible for car number 8, made of wood powered by charcoal. The coal stove is the Wagon's weak point, which represents an advantage to its rivals. In addition, Uncle Tomás tries several techniques to improve his running performance. Urso is afraid of everything that happens in the race, often getting in the way of his good Uncle Tomás.
Car 09: remember the Penelope charming? So he's her potential boyfriend, driver of car number 9, a dragster with big rear wheels and who tends to fall apart because he's too fragile. Like the others we've already mentioned, he won four times.
Car 10: Rufus Lumberjack and your partner the beaver saw teeth, are the drivers of car number 10. Basically, it is a wooden trailer with circular saws in place of the wheels. This attribute allows you to cut your rivals in half when overtaking. They also use sharp artifacts to remove obstacles from the race.
