Know the main terms that are used by gamers! With the constant growth of the gaming market around the world in recent years, a lot has changed and many have been developed for millions of people. In addition to that, almost a language of its own was also created around this universe of video games. In addition to the many competitions, the world of games is also full of specific terms that end up leaving some doubts in the public. To better understand these words that are used in games, check out this special glossary!

AFK: “Away from keyboard”, that is, away from the keyboard. Usually used to say that a player is offline in the game.

APM: Abbreviation for “actions per minute”. Generally used to refer to the speed at which a player makes decisions in a match.

Ban: Banishment in esports can refer to punishing a player for some bad behavior. Inside the game it usually refers to the act of banning a character or map, that is, preventing it from being used in competition.

Buff: Refers to favorably changing a specific item, skill or character in a game, making them stronger and more effective. Buffs occur in game updates or for specific abilities of an item or character within a game.

Engage: Moment when one or more players start a fight in the game.


FPS: Abbreviation for “Frames per Second”, ie frames per second. Measures how fast the image is displayed. The lower your FPS, the slower a game will run. The ideal is always to be above 30 fps or 60 fps, in some cases there is a locked FPS, which is the definition to fix the Frame Rate and enable better performance.

FPS (Game - Different Context): The acronym FPS also refers to a type of game, the First Person Shooter. The term means “first person shooter”, some examples of games in this genre are: Counter-Strike, Rainbow Six Siege, Call of Duty, among others.

Split: It is the name used in a season of a championship. Some tournaments have more than one season per year, such as the Brazilian League of Legends which has two seasons, that is, two splits.

Bootcamp: Period in which esports teams train outside their region, that is, the country where they compete. Bootcamps allow athletes to play against opponents from other places and on another server (or server in English – also used), always seeking more experience and knowledge for the entire team in question.

Comp: Very simple! It is the abbreviation of “Composition”, it is the composition of the characters, champions or even the heroes of a team within a game.


Cooldown: Reload time of a skill, item, among other possibilities depending on the context in question. In other words, it's important to analyze it first and put it in a better context.

Caster: Name given to members of the broadcast team of some sport. Usually used to talk about presenters and narrators of the competition.

DPS: English abbreviation for “Damage per Second”, that is, damage per second in Brazilian Portuguese translation.

Early Game: Or just “Começo de Jogo” in Brazilian Portuguese. It is usually used to talk about the performance of a team or player in the early stages of the match.

Calls: Team calls within a game, that is, decision-making and guidance given during the match.

Coach: Name that is used recurrently to coaches of game teams, usually eSports (or just electronic sports).

Counter: It is a very common term to be used in the act of using items, skills, strategies to neutralize an enemy tactic. A counter is an action that takes into account the specifics of your opponent.

Carry: It's basically a character model that usually provides more damage throughout the game and has, in turn, great advantages in "Team Fights", carrying your team many times.


CC: It is an abbreviation in English of “Crowd Control”, that is, group control. In practice, it refers to items or abilities used to harm, deter, or control an enemy.

Ace: It is a term that refers to when all members of a team are eliminated. In Counter-Strike: Global Offensive the expression applies only when a player eliminates all of his enemies. In League of Legends, not necessarily the kills are from the same player.

Poke: Attacks, usually from a distance, in which a player tries not to get hit back to gain small advantages and put pressure on the enemy.

Patch: It is the update pack for a game. Changing a patch can change the ways a team plays in esports competitions.

Pro Player: Term used and named for players who are gaming professionals.

Pick: Meaning choice, usually refers to choosing a character within a game.

Spawn: It refers to the moment when a player appears or is “born” in the game.

Build: Grouping of customizations made to optimize your character in the game, such as: skills, attributes and miscellaneous items.

GG: Abbreviation for “Good Game”, that is, “good game”. A greeting to praise a player or team at the end of a match.

GH: Abbreviation for “Good Half”. It is used to say that a player performed well in the first half of the game.

Gank: This term is used a lot in MOBAs. It refers to when a player leaves his lane and heads for another one. The purpose of a gank is to help a teammate and/or gain an advantage in the lane.

Healer: Pretty simple too! It means “Healers” in direct translation, that is, types of characters that act mainly by healing the team.

Line up: Composition of the players of a team, whatever it may be.

Lag: Term that defines a delay in response time between the player's action and the game itself. It is usually caused by a bad internet connection.

Late Game: Unlike "Early Game" in English, the term is used to talk about the performance of a team or player in the final moments of the game.

RAID: It's a widely used term, especially at Twitch. This is when a streamer (the person who carries out the transmissions) directs his audience to another channel on Twitch itself. It is known as RAID, or also “Ganker” in some cases.

Stream: It means transmission. Often used to talk about broadcasts on Twitch, YouTube and Mixer, for example.

OP: It is an abbreviation for “Overpowered” in English, expression that refers to something or someone who is excessively strong in the game. It can be a character, an item, an ability, among other possibilities, depending again on the context to be inserted.

Lane: These are the routes on the MOBA maps, generally they are: Middle, Top and Bot. For each lane there are different ways to play and certain types of characters are used.

skill: It means skill. It can be used to talk about the ability of a pro player or a character within the game.

Farm: Act of killing the minions to get gold, that is, money and/or experience (XP – Experience or Experience).

Tank: This is a player or character who is capable of taking a lot of damage without losing a lot of life/HP.

TF (Team Fight): Name given to the group fight, which may even include all team members.

WP: It is a simple abbreviation for "Well Played" which means "Well Played", it is usually used a lot in a common game of games.

Feed: Die several times (which is even my case) and, with that, result in several advantages and resources to the enemy team, in other words, the competitor in question. The word “Feed” comes from “feed”, it alludes to the fact that the deaths feed the opposing team.

Skin: They are visual modifications of the characters in a game, it's like “changing the clothes” of your character. The skins are sold within the game platforms and are often themed with an allusion to different cultures, commemorative dates and the like.
