You know those moments that end up bothering you when, especially in hotter days, the electric light on the poles, in your house, apartment and everywhere, is full of those “pets” flying around, hitting the light bulb and falling in several different places? And you, do you know why this happens to these insects? Find out in my special article about Science!
Well, the insects that transit in the nocturnal part, in general, are guided by the Moonlight and they go by it when they go for their food, that is, they use moonlight to know how to get home. However, the Moon is far away and any interference from light that appears in front of it causes the insects to become disoriented.
You may be asking yourself: why does this happen? So, this is because electric light (be it from lamps, candles, and even from Smartphones, Tablets and TVs screens) are much closer, and shine very brightly. more intensity compared to moonlight, which ends up confusing the insects. On the other hand, when the insect approaches or moves away from the light, the angle to it varies greatly.
In this way, to try keep constant, as it usually happens when orienting itself by the geo-position of the Moon, the insect tries to correct its flight path at certain intervals. So you watch it fly in smaller and smaller spirals until it collides with the light or hits the ground.
And you, what do you think about it? Share your opinion with us! 🙂
