Recently, the great SpaceX of Elon Musk, made history by launching a pair of American astronauts from NASA to the International Space Station (ISS). according to the source ZDNet, the historic release was also a major achievement for the move from proprietary software to open source (known as “Open-Source”) by controlling the rocket. Falcon 9 with a version of the open source Linux operating system.
The Linux version was not specified for security and trade secrecy reasons. It is performed in three dual-core x86 processors. This redundancy system keeps astronauts safe by ensuring that all three units reach consensus before executing any commands. Still, some SpaceX officials also previously confirmed that the space rocket Dragon Crew (which carries the astronauts) also uses Linux as its primary operating system.
In practice, SpaceX is not the first to put open source software into orbit. That's because the International Space Station (ISS), where the same astronauts that were launched by SpaceX work at this very moment, changed their systems to Linux in 2013, which previously worked with Microsoft's Windows operating system and had some various problems - I hope other than auto update or blue screen. 🙂
