"The Sword Was the Law" is an epic animated film produced by Walt Disney in 1963, based on the book of 1938 by the same name as the english author TH White. The film is an animation from Disney Studios and was released in theaters on December 25, 1963. It was directed by Wolfgang Reitherman and produced by Walt Disney. Remember those moments in our new nostalgic post!
The film is sensational and is based on facts accompanied by fate. In "The Sword Was the Law", whoever could pull out a magic sword embedded in a stone would be crowned king of england. The smart boy Arthur, who is unaware of the legend, works as an assistant in a castle and dreams of becoming a knight. However, the magician merlin who lives in the forest, knows the future and knows that Arthur will be king.
So he moves into a castle tower (falling apart) along with his faithful and funny assistant, the owl. Archimedes, and attributes to himself the mission of giving a dignified education to Arthur. A little confused, Merlin starts talking about things and people that, in fact, don't exist yet. His best lessons are when he turns Arthur into different animals, like a squirrel or a fish.
During these lessons in the forest, both end up drawing the attention of an evil witch, the Madame Min. With that, Madame Min tries to impress Arthur and humiliate Merlin, challenging him to a duel of magic.
However, the best part of the movie is Mr. merlin. He is responsible for valuable lessons for the future Arthur amidst various rages, funny most of the time. Merlin is temperamental, he goes to Bermuda in the middle of the film, but still retain an aura of wisdom. Always helped by your owl, Archimedes (they live in constant conflict), he tries to convince Arthur of the importance of studying and acquiring knowledge.
The film follows several clichés sequentially. Arthur is a young man with a good heart who suffers abuse, merlin is the wise and eccentric wizard (literally), Madame Me it is the evil witch who, in the end, is a victim of her own “cunning”, Sir Kay and Sir Ector who are the men who only see their own navel. But there is no question, because the script makes these clichés work and the narrative makes total sense. Clichés, when used well, after all, are cool.
Remember that this movie has one of the most hilarious scenes in the entire history of Walt Disney movies: the magic duel between Merlin and Madame Mim, which occurs right at the end. Even those who have never watched "The Sword Was the Law", must have seen this scene somewhere, but in another way.
“The Sword Was the Law” brings great memories and is certainly one of the best films ever produced by Walt Disney. The VHS version came out in 1993 and anyone who was a child in the 90s will surely remember the tape with the voices of classic voice actors.
And you, what do you think of “The Sword Was the Law”? 🙂
