Review: Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy is an upcoming action role-playing video game developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game is set in the Harry Potter universe and was officially released on February 20, 2023.

The game's premise is exciting: the player takes on the role of a Hogwarts student in the late 19th century, exploring a vast and interactive magical world. Hogwarts Legacy allows players to customize their characters and choose their own adventure, with quests that affect storyline and gameplay.

For several years, fans passionate about the universe of Harry Potter always wanted a way to live their own stories in the wizarding universe, as the universe of books, movies and video games only allowed us to live the story we already knew.

When Hogwarts Legacy was officially announced in 2020, the promise came that this RPG would be as grand and detailed as the world of the books and movies. There is, therefore, a background of truth, the story mixes innovation with the classic universe that fans already know, allowing the player to experience from receiving the letter from Hogwarts to the tireless struggles and challenges of a typical student.

Hogwarts Legacy is what fans of this Harry Potter universe have always wanted. It has fulfilled all my expectations since the first time I watched the Harry Potter films in mid-2011.

For that reason, it is obvious that this game was designed, above all, for those people who grew up and lived with this universe, choosing one of the four known Hogwarts Houses to call their own or even playing with branches while pretending to cast spells.

Soon, Hogwarts Legacy becomes a new milestone within this children's and youth culture that has spread to new and old generations, as if it were a legacy. Of course, not everything about this game is perfect. Some things can even disturb the immersion of those players who like to do a deeper roleplay and feel like a real Hogwarts student.

In addition, it is possible to see the affection of its developers in each part of the scenario: the details, references and characters. Without a doubt, buying Hogwarts Legacy is a worthwhile investment, especially for the most passionate and faithful fans of this universe, as they will have a great product in their hands. However, even those who haven't followed or don't understand this Harry Potter fever, can find a story worth following!

One of the biggest highlights of the game, without a doubt, are its story and setting. These two aspects sustain a good part of the quality and show, from the beginning of the narrative, that his character is not a conventional student, but someone endowed with powerful abilities that attract the interest of different people and beings, and not all of them are interested in it. the good.

The story's introduction works very well, with the main character taken from London by a horseless carriage along with Professor Fig. However, during a conversation that establishes the first pillars of the narrative, a dragon attacks and you see the Thestrals.

However, the intensity of the first moments of the script does not stop there. After being transported to the remains of a forgotten ruin, you still need to go through Gringotts bank, face some enemies to – finally – reach Hogwarts castle, not forgetting that, before that, you also discovered that you can control Ancestral Magic.

Another scene that stirs the emotions of fans of the Harry Potter saga is the moment when you travel to the village of Hogsmeade for the first time to buy a wand that is really yours – since the one used by the character at the beginning of the story was just improvised.

There's all that mystique that the object chooses its owner, so until the moment you can customize yours to your liking, there are some tests that don't work out. This helps a lot with immersion and feeling part of this world.

Although many fans believe that the sport is far from fair, as the match can often be defined by the Seeker capturing the Golden Snitch, which guarantees 150 points for his team, everyone agrees that it would be interesting to have a similar element within of the game, to give more options of what to do and not leave a “void”.

I am not saying that Hogwarts Legacy contains little content, on the contrary, it is possible to see practically the entire structure ready to receive the sport within the game. The assembled Quidditch field, with its hoops and bleachers, themed clothing sets, brooms to fly and even many students and teachers complaining about the absence of the sport that year.

One of the main factors of Hogwarts Legacy is that you are not limited to just the castle, as the map is very large and manages to have something to do in every corner. So exploring each region as much as possible is one of the most fun points here. After a few hours of gameplay, this mechanism gets even better, as you get a broom and can see the beauty of the scenarios produced.

Hogwarts Legacy has a main story that takes about 30 to 35 hours to complete, but the time can decrease if the player focuses only on these missions and does not do the secondary missions. However, it is the time that I consider sufficient for a plot in this universe, without getting boring and artificially increasing the playing time.

If you're one of those players that likes to explore every bit of the map and do everything, then the time increases considerably. Since according to the creators' own estimates, it takes more or less 100 hours for you to make 100% of the story. By the way, here's a tip: do the side quests, as they add a lot to the story.

In my tests on the PC, I had several problems with FPS drops and even with DLSS enabled on an RTX 3070, nothing solved it. Apparently, versions for consoles such as PlayStation and Xbox are more stable in this regard at the time I carry out the analysis of the game, but nothing that a correction patch can't solve and make exceptional on PC in the future.

Although the studio has stated that there is no forecast for future DLCs for the history of Hogwarts Legacy, I can easily see a release in the future suddenly 1 or 2 years from now for the game, since we already have the entire structure ready for new releases and perhaps with the return of Quidditch.
