Indiana Jones and the Relic of Destiny is the only film in the franchise that is not directed by Steven Spielberg. The director watched the film and loved it.
Director James Mangold, took over the direction of the fifth film in the franchise. Anyone worried that an Indiana Jones movie without Spielberg might not live up to expectations can rest easy, as Spielberg himself loved the latest sequel. At the Time 100 Summit (via Variety), Steven said:
“I just had this experience two nights ago.”
When asked what it's like to watch an Indiana Jones movie he didn't direct, Steven stated:
“Bob Iger had a screening for many of the Disney executives and I came to the screening along with director James Mangold. Everyone loved the movie. It's a really, really good Indiana Jones movie. I'm really proud of what Jim did with it.”
Spielberg added:
“When the lights came up, I just turned to the group and said, 'Damn it! I thought I was the only one who knew how to make one of these.”
