After many years, I decided to look again Just Dance. The last review was from Just Dance 2016, since there was not much difference in versions, with the exception of new songs through a Full Price game. However, has this scenario changed and can Just Dance 2020 really deliver something new or a better experience? That's what you'll see here in my special review! Let's Dance – Let's Dance! 🙂
In a very contextual way, Ubisoft brought us another Just Dance, with the end of 2020, and also decided to debut on Google Stadia. For this review, I played (or rather danced) with the Nintendo Switch version where we have the possibility to play with Joycons and/or Smartphones.
Without a doubt, analyzing a game with these characteristics is not an easy task. This is because in each new edition very little is really changed, with the exception of its playlist. As such, in this review I will basically highlight all the possibilities that this game offers us, delving into the available options to spend great moments together with friends to literally do good physical exercises. 😛
In Just Dance 2020, the criterion of fun is absolutely guaranteed, not least because there are several different types of dance capable of making us move our skeleton, sometimes in a very ridiculous and shameful way. And, believe me, dancing to the screen and trying to imitate each movement is quite a funny situation.
In practice, all the humans who were used as an example in a video full of special effects are professional dancers. We're not, at least I'm not a professional dancer, am I? 😀 The result is a very funny moment with a certain immersion, especially if you are transmitting it…
It is important to note that each song has a certain level of difficulty, as follows: Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme. A new feature in this edition is the indication of what can be unlocked in each song. The first time it is completed, an avatar is offered and if it is overcome three times, a sticker is offered for the collection of special items – a way of trying to engage you to continue playing – or rather, dancing.
In practice, if we get a score megastar, a gold avatar is unlocked. All of this is, of course, just cosmetic. In addition to the normal versions of the songs, they all have an alternate version that can be unlocked after literally dancing to the same song five times or reaching the high score. Super star – i.e. Ninja. These variants are usually more challenging than the standard versions.
Another really cool option is the kids mode which, as the name implies, has a list of songs that are aimed at children. There are a handful of children's songs here with simple choreography, which reminded me that I'm old… 😀 Still, we have the third and final way to play Just Dance 2020, a completely new mode that can be considered as a kind of “Story Mode“.
In Campaign (or Story) Mode, we have a series of intermediate scenes with the famous and classic Just Dance Panda, who aims to travel with his spaceship through different planets and needs your humble help. Why not? Each time we “navigate” each planet in this way, the panda captures various choreographies from previous games in the entire series, logically including Just Dance 2020.
In a quick summary, Just Dance 2020 managed to substantially improve motion detection – especially on Nintendo Switch. In visual aspects, Just Dance 2020 maintains the choreographies, with its characteristic model and the entire interface is honestly similar to the 2019 edition, focusing on simplicity and ease of use. About the music catalog, I think it is adequate to the themes that stood out the most, with a lot of variety. But, tastes will obviously vary from person to person.
Another important point I should mention is the Just Dance Unlimited, a daily, monthly, quarterly or annual subscription service, where you can access more than 500 songs to dance to for a fee, which may vary according to the exchange rate and currency used. Every Just Dance 2020 player is entitled to one month free of this service. If you like to dance a lot, I recommend subscribing to access this entire catalogue. Needless to say I signed it, right? 😀
My opinion
- Graphics
- Interface
- Fun
- Gameplay
- Functionalities
- Music Catalog
- Just Dance Unlimited Subscription
Conclusion
“Just Dance 2020” dances to the rhythm it should, despite continuing to repeat the same formula with a few improvements. It is a franchise that has focused on improvements – it is true, not only in terms of the interface with better movement recognition, but also with more songs in the catalogue. However, we still feel that “something is missing” point… The musical repertoire is quite varied and is sure to please fans and dancers alike.
