Science as a whole is an amazing thing, right? But who has never imagined themselves in a situation of being in an environment, in the middle of class or even in a relaxed conversation and being surprised by funny and sometimes embarrassing questions? With that in mind, we've separated 4 funny questions answered by science!
1 – Are Pisces thirsty?
It's a very interesting question. But no, according to science, fish don't drink water, at least not like we humans do. The liquid diffuses through the body of these marine animals by a process known as osmosis – well known.
How this happens to fish in general will depend on the type of water they reside in, whether fresh or salty, and also the depth of those waters. In other words, fish need to ingest water, they just don't feel thirsty.
2 – Why is water wet?
What we humans call and know as “wet” is actually the cold we feel as the water evaporates, which we understand as the relative humidity of water.
A nice way to understand this in practice is to imagine other liquids, like cooking oil, that don't evaporate easily.
In addition, in conventional situations and normal conditions of temperature and pressure, the sensation of dipping your finger in the two will be quite different.
3 – After all, how do birds urinate?
Since birds do not have a bladder to store urine, the liquids that birds drink go straight to their intestines. Through the intestines of birds, they are absorbed, passing into the blood and reaching the kidneys, where they are completely purified.
Another curious thing is that the leftovers from this process are deposited together with the feces in a part of the intestine called the coprodeu, one of the three structures that make up the cloaca – remembering biology classes? 🙂 When expelling, everything comes out together as if it were a whitish paste.
4 – How do we know the sounds that dinosaurs made?
This is a complex and interesting question for renowned scientists. Nothing like a good dinosaur movie like Jurassic Park. Certainly, this was a very difficult mission for the scientists, after all, the vocal cords of the dinos were made of soft tissue and were not fossilized.
What scientists have done to answer funny questions like this is look at the closest living relatives like birds, crocodiles and other reptiles. In this way, they were able to raise hypotheses about how the vocal structures vibrated and produced deep and loud sounds. Interesting, no? 🙂
