In the early 1990s, Nintendo wanted to revitalize the “Donkey Kong“, a character created by Miyamoto in the early 1980s and with a strong past in the company, in arcade productions and for consoles who achieved immense success, but at some point became “central” revitalize its image and give it a contemporary look to the game.
Like "Super Nintendo” in evidence, came the idea of moving towards a new innovative project: why not create a new series returning one of the most known protagonists by Nintendo to fans? That's when “Shigeru Miyamoto” had a brilliant idea!
With Miyamoto involved in other projects, namely in 3D productions and the planning of the Nintendo 64, Nintendo thought as director of the new game, the British “Tim Stamper” that since the times of NES he was trying to convince Nintendo to publish his projects for the console. So began the rare, having for years successfully contributed to the establishment of series such as Donkey Kong Country, GoldenEye 007, Killer Instint, among others, whose property was in his possession as “Banjo & Kazooie” and “Conker”.
Together with the designer “Gregg Mayles” and always under the supervision of Miyamoto, as a product quality measurer and manager, Tim started using one of the tools owned by the studio: the Advanced Computer Modeling that offered the advantage of transporting 3D models to an interactive 2D setting. From a graphic point of view, the potential offered by the tool was colossal and Nintendo did not reject the opportunity to take advantage of the talent of these producers.
Almost 22 years after the debut of Donkey Kong Country, being released on November 24, 1994, its chart 2.5 D still deserves comments for the special rendering, enhancing many three-dimensional effects, such as rotations, depths. The game fits into the platform genre. However, it's not a game so full of “power ups”, alternative exits and small details like Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island, surely two reference games, and perhaps the most solid and best 2D productions of platforms ever created.
“Donkey Kong Country” is a simple and linear game, where even the movement of enemies gets to the basics, causing difficulties just by jumping, forcing the player to adapt to their actions, so as not to fall and lose everything. In addition, there are many bananas to accumulate and exchange for precious items, as well as the famous letters that form the word “Kong“sometimes very well hidden.
The game is the first title in a trilogy that achieved unparalleled success on the Super Nintendo, having been one of the best-selling games, with approximately 9.3 million units. Relevant in the context of platforms and regarded as one of the most nostalgic, its success was the basis of Nintendo's decision to launch Donkey Kong Country Returns in 2010 on Wii.
